![]() ![]() In doing this, God set aside the natural order of what physical life has been since the fall of man. If that is the case, how could Lazarus (and others) be raised from the dead, live again, and die a second physical death? The simple answer is that those who were resurrected and brought back to life were resurrected by a miracle of God. And Hebrews 9:27 is speaking of physical death and clearly declares only one physical death. Therefore, Jesus said, “you must be born again” (John 3:7). In the application of Hebrews 9:27, we must begin by remembering that, since Adam, all are born spiritually dead because of sin. The death imposed in the Garden was both a spiritual death and a physical death. Therefore, Adam, and everyone born since Adam, has death as the penalty of sin imposed upon them. The book of Romans confirms that the “wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). When Adam sinned in the Garden, God imposed death as the consequence of his sin. The verse in Hebrews speaks of the ultimate end of every man when it says that man will die once. While it does seem that the resurrection of Lazarus is a contradiction to the verse in Hebrews 9:27, it is not. Have you ever thought that if Jesus had simply said "come forth" instead of "Lazarus come forth", then the whole of that graveyard and perhaps all the dead would have come out of their graves - such was His power. If the Bible says “it is appointed to man once to die and then the judgment,” how do we harmonize Lazarus being raised from the dead and thus having to die twice? The same question applies for anyone who was recorded in the Bible as having been raised from the dead. Our Lord Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, but he would die again. Moses, as we read in Deuteronomy 34:5 died in Moab and God buried him. My own personal opinion is that they are Enoch and Elijah as the only two who have never died. Some believe that these two are Moses and Elijah. They are then taken again bodily into heaven. They will then be murdered by Antichrist, who leaves their bodies three and a half days in the streets. ![]() These two men will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixy days. God sends two witnesses during the time of Jacob's Trouble (sometimes called the Great Tribulation). I think Revelation Chapter 11 has a bearing on this. I suggest it was much like what those still alive in body will experience when Jesus returns:ġTh 4:17 Then we which are alive remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.Įlijah who was taken up in a fiery chariot into heaven and Enoch who walked with God and was not are the only two individuals who have been taken bodily to heaven without passing through death. So, while he did not die a tradition death where the body wears out for one reason or another, he did suffer the loss of his physical body. Maybe God just didn't see a reason to tell us the circumstances surrounding his death - we simply don't know.Įlijah on the other hand is pretty clear, however, I would say he did die the first death as the Scriptures say flesh and blood cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This is in contrast to the spiritual death of our souls.Īs for Enoch, the Bible doesn't say he didn't die. It is a referral to the fact that everyone will suffer the loss of their physical body. Yes, Lazarus died a physical death and was brought back to life and must have died again.īut that is not what "die once" means. ![]()
